Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress

Morris is an energetic little boy who loves pancakes, puzzles, apple juice, and most of all, the tangerine dress in the dress-up center at his school.  His classmates tell him that dresses are only for girls.  The boys refuse to let Morris join them on their spaceship.  By the end of the week, Morris has a tummy ache.  He stays home and his imagination takes him on amazing adventures.

Reading Aloud in Upper Elementary & Middle School Classroom

Fifth-grade teacher Maura Hudson talks about the joys and benefits of reading aloud for her students. Reading aloud strengthens cognition, builds vocabulary, assists with pronunciation, helps to increase attention span and listening skills.  It also builds community, empathy, and shared experiences that allow us to converse and share experiences.

STEM Learning & Literature Connections

Books are the key to many types of learning experiences.  Seedlings Facilitator and 6 to 6 Magnet School educator shares her experience with connecting STEM lessons to children’s literature.  She shares how she implemented her lesson, “Trash to Treasure,” starting with reading a story called One Plastic Bag and the Recycling Women of Zambia. Children were then able to select a piece of trash to either up cycle or recycle.
