Jabari Jumps: Written and Illustrated by Gaia Cornwall
Jabari Jumps is a simple story about big topics. Jabari, a young Black boy, finished his swimming lessons, passed his test, and is ready to challenge himself by jumping off the high diving board at the local community pool. “I’m a great jumper,’ said Jabari, ‘So I’m not scared at all.’” As he watches the other children climb and dive, and looks up from the base of the ladder, he begins to wonder if this big dive is really a good idea. He climbs up a few rungs, stops, and tells his dad he’s just a bit tired. Will his dad be able to help Jabari gain the confidence to accomplish his goal?
Gaia Cornwall’s large illustrations are incredibly appealing. The two-page spreads draw the reader in, and her use of perspective makes you feel you’re right by Jabari’s side, whether looking up at the diving board or peering down from above. Many of the backgrounds are drawn in watery greens which contrast beautifully with the rich skin colors of this family. At the end of the story, the large illustrations make their expressions of happiness and pride jump off the page, and readers can’t help smiling along with them.
Possible Discussion Pathways
- What does it mean to be brave?
- As the school year started this year, were there situations that called for bravery? If so, what do you do to make yourself “take the plunge?” How can our classroom community make it feel safe for children to take risks, no matter how small?
- Be brave like Jabari! Share your personal feelings about your beginning of the year nerves.
